AMUSE BOUCHE

Exhibition, NVRLND. Boutique, Calgary, 2022

Overview
Amuse Bouche is a gallery exhibition of one-of-one objects for adornment, positioned deliberately between fine art and high craft. The work moves across precious metals and contemporary materials, using surrealist form and sculptural humour to challenge the idea that adornment belongs outside the gallery. It is playful, sharp, and unbothered by category policing.

Statement
In the last 1920s, années folles marked a collision of social, cultural, and artistic expression. Coming out of our own surreal years, I wanted to make bold work that takes note of what just happened and how we choose to re-enter the world.
Genderless adornment has always been central to my practice. With Amuse Bouche, I built a fully immersive environment and treated every fixture, sound, light, and corner as part of the work. High craft can be amusing. Lowbrow can hold meaning. The idea that craft does not belong in art spaces is antiquated, gendered, and tired.
